PRF for Hair Loss: Everything You Need to Know

If you’ve noticed thinning hair or you’re dealing with full-blown bald spots, you might have started exploring your options. You don’t necessarily want to be stuck wearing hats or, worse yet, a finicky toupee. You also don’t want to have to take medication for the rest of your life. And many people find surgery the least appealing option of all.

That’s why Elaine Phuah, DO, MBA, FACOI, offers yet another alternative. Here at Hanami Medspa in Fort Worth, Texas, she can use platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) to target and ideally reverse hair loss. Let’s take a closer look at this hair restoration option and how it could work for you.

PRF 101

Platelet-rich fibrin isn’t some synthetic solution. Instead, Dr. Phuah gets the PRF from a small sample of your blood.

Your blood contains platelets. When you get hurt, your system directs those platelets to the injury. They help your blood clot, but that’s not all. Platelets contain growth factors, resources your body uses to heal by stimulating cellular regeneration.

Researchers realized the potential of platelets and started applying them through platelet-rich plasma, or PRP. PRF further refines that solution.

To get the PRF, Dr. Phuah puts a small sample of your blood into a centrifuge. This allows her to separate the platelets into a fibrin matrix. PRF helps release growth factors over time, driving ongoing regeneration in the treated area.

PRP has already shown promise for hair restoration. When the platelets are applied to inactive hair follicles, they can help restore them. PRF plays on these same principles, potentially with even more notable results.

What to expect with PRF for hair loss

Dr. Phuah applies the PRF to hair follicles that need it by injecting it into areas where you have thinning or balding. The number of injections you need depends on what’s going on in your specific scalp. Dr. Phuah tailors a treatment plan to you.

Upon injection, the growth factors in the PRF go to work. You should notice improved hair growth within a few months. (If you have some hair shedding shortly after treatment, don’t worry — this happens sometimes as your follicles start leveraging the growth factors.)

Just like the number of injections, Dr. Phuah customizes treatment based on your scalp and your hair goals. For most people, she recommends 3–6 treatments, each spaced about a month apart.

Once you reach your desired level of hair restoration, Dr. Phuah implements a maintenance plan. Usually, that means getting a couple of PRF treatments each year.
