PRF Hair Restoration Q & A

What are PRF scalp injections?

Platelet-Rich-Fibrin (PRF) hair restoration is a new, non-surgical treatment that uses your own cell growth factors to regenerate and restore the inactive hair follicle through wound-healing technology. These specific growth factors are essential in tissue regeneration and healing and are found circulating in your bloodstream.

Who’s a good candidate?

PRF is best for people who have mild to moderate hair thinning and is highly effective for both men and women, especially those in the early stages of genetic hair loss. 100% natural, minimally invasive PRF hair loss treatment is ideal for people whose hair is thinning or who have had hair transplants. Not all hair loss issues have the same root cause, therefore, PRF injections may not always work on everyone. PRF injections should generally not be performed on patients taking blood thinners, or who have a blood clotting disease, collagen vascular disease, an active infection, or immunosuppression disorders.

How long does PRF last for hair loss?

When will I see results from PRF hair loss treatment? Most patients will see a decrease in new hair loss, shedding or thinning almost immediately. The new hair growth usually becomes visible within two to three months after PRF treatment. For a small percentage of patients, they may experience a paradoxical hair shedding phase prior to stabilization.

How does PRF work for hair?

During a PRF treatment, the patient's blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge. This process separates the platelet-rich fibrin from the rest of the blood. The PRF is then injected into the scalp where hair loss is being experienced. Patients will start noticing new hair growth in the months following their treatments as hair growth is a gradual process. For most PRF treatments, the best results can be seen after a series of 3-6 treatments every 4-6 weeks and then can be maintained with a treatment two times a year.

Can PRF scalp injections be combined with other hair loss treatments?

Yes. PRF treatments can be combined with other hair restoration treatments such as prescriptions medications, vitamin supplements, low level laser therapy, microneedling, and Hydrafacial Keravive.

What should you not do after PRF hair treatment?

Do not use any hair products for at least 6 hours after your treatment. Avoid saunas, steam rooms, swimming for 2 days after your treatment. Avoid vigorous exercise, sun and heat exposure for at least 2 days after your treatment. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and smoking for 3 days after treatment.

What are the risks?

Because PRF is a totally natural healing substance from your very own blood, there is little to no risk. Common side effects include tenderness, swelling, bleeding, bruising, itching, and/or scabs in the treated area. Some patients also experience a headache.
