Dermaplaning

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is the process in which your aesthetics professional uses a small, medical-grade, sterile scalpel to manually scrape dead skin cells and fine hairs, or peach fuzz, from the surface of your skin. It’s a painless yet effective way to exfoliate your skin and allow newer, fresher skin cells to come to the surface.

What are the benefits of dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning has many benefits, such as:

  • Increases absorption of topical moisturizers
  • Stimulates cellular turnover
  • Provides chemical-free exfoliation for people with sensitive skin
  • Works in conjunction with facials, laser treatments, and chemical peels
  • Helps makeup go on more evenly
  • Diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Creates a healthier, radiant glow
  • Safely removes facial hair

Dermaplaning works well for all skin types as long as you don’t have inflamed, active acne cysts. There’s no downtime after the procedure, and it doesn’t make your hair grow back any thicker than it was before the treatment.

What can I expect during a dermaplaning treatment?

The procedure itself takes just about 15 minutes or so. You relax comfortably as you would for a facial, and your aesthetic specialist gently uses a medical scalpel to scrape away the layer of dead skin from your face. After the procedure, you may also get a facial, chemical peel, or another recommended treatment to enhance the results of dermaplaning.

It’s important to wear sunscreen after dermaplaning because the renewed surface layer of your skin is susceptible to damage from the sun’s harmful rays. Your provider at Hanami Medspa may also recommend a BelleDerm® professional skin care products and moisturizers to keep your skin clean, exfoliated, and hydrated for longer-lasting benefits.

There’s no downtime, but your skin may be a little pink afterward. You’re free to return to work or other daily activities immediately following your dermaplane appointment.

How long do dermaplaning results last?

Typically, you’ll notice an improvement in your facial skin for up to four weeks after treatment. You can schedule a dermaplaning appointment every month or so to keep your skin looking and feeling its absolute healthiest. During your initial skin care consultation at Hanami Medspa, you can discuss dermaplaning with Dr. Phuah to determine if it can be a beneficial part of your comprehensive skin care routine.
