Melasma Q & A

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a notoriously difficult to treat skin condition that is characterized by brown or blue-grey patches or freckle like spots, commonly occurring on the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin. It’s often called the “mask of pregnancy” and is caused by multiple factors. Sun exposure or UV light from simply being outside without proper sun protection, to using tanning beds. Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, can also trigger the condition.

How can I treat melasma if I have it?

While alternative treatments like lightening creams and certain medications can reduce the appearance of melasma, nothing works quite like the Neo Elite laser. The Neo Elite’s unique 650-microsecond 1064 Nd:YAG laser technology breaks up the epidermal (surface) pigment, while also addressing the deeper pigment and vascular components of melasma. This allows the treatment to penetrate deeper than topical lightening creams, and even Q switched Nd:YAG lasers. Clinical evaluations have shown modest improvement in patients’ pigment depending on compliance with treatment recommendations. Results will vary as melasma is one of the most challenging conditions to treat. Get long-lasting results with addition of dermaplaning, light chemical peels, and physician-grade skin care.

What can I expect during my treatment?

One of the most amazing things about this laser is that it is virtually painless. Most patients undergoing treatment report that the treatment is very comfortable, and they have no need for topical anesthetics or skin cooling. There’s no downtime, no side effects, and the Neo Elite laser is revolutionary in the fact that it can safely and effectively treat patients of all skin tones and types, even skin of color.
